Black Excellence Day held on Friday, January 13 in 2023, is a day to celebrate Black history and learn more about Black stories, art, and people leading up to February Black History Month. This day was chosen to honour civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In addition to the book collection available to you in our Brentwood Park library, here are different media links and invitations to learn more about Black Canadians, Black Americans, Black citizens who have achieved milestones, changed history, been true to themselves and have/are bringing forth change for the betterment of us all. This is what excellence is about and what we can all strive to achieve in our own unique ways.
Happy viewing. Remember to wear Black on Friday in support of Black Excellence Day in Canada

CANADIAN BLACK HISTORY PERIODIC TABLE
Periodic Table of Canadian Black History
Important figures in Canadian Black History; organized as elements of the Periodic Table we’ve all seen in our classrooms
What a fun and engaging way to get the whole class involved by recreating this amazing Periodic Table based on Black Canadian Historical figures. The Canadian Black History Periodic Table project was created by Isabela Ozamiz and Nicholas Simard using data from Parents for Diversity in co-operation with Mr. Ozamiz and Ms. Lemon; teachers in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
Picture Books and Read-Alouds
are such a wonderful way to engage in conversations about Excellence, History, and resilience. Here are Read Alone versions from the Netflix Jr Series Bookmarks that highlight Black literature, pride and creativity. Watch these in your classes or grab one of these stories from the library and read them with your classes.
